Overview
Proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is essential to prevent infection spread and protect both residents and staff. This competency ensures that all NJRA respiratory therapists understand and correctly follow PPE standards.
After completing the training, you should be able to:
- Identify required PPE for isolation and MDRO precautions
- Correctly don and doff PPE in sequence
- Use safe work practices during trach care and suctioning
- Perform hand hygiene per NJRA standards
Key PPE Steps (Donning)
- Gown: Fully cover torso, arms, and wrap around the back; tie at neck and waist.
- Mask/Respirator: Secure ties/elastic, mold nosepiece, ensure snug fit to face and chin.
- Goggles/Face Shield: Place over eyes/face and adjust to fit snugly.
- Gloves: Extend to cover gown cuffs; change when torn, soiled, or between residents.
Key PPE Steps (Doffing)
- Remove gloves first without touching skin.
- Remove goggles/face shield from the back, avoid touching the front.
- Remove gown touching inside only, turn inside-out, roll away from body.
- Remove mask/respirator last using straps only.
- Final step: Perform hand hygiene immediately.
Hand Hygiene
- Wash for at least 20 seconds with soap and water.
- Cover all surfaces: palms, backs, between fingers, thumbs, and fingertips.
- Rinse well and dry completely.
